An interesting ’spin’ on Nelson Piquet’s little accident in Singapore last year. It’s from Liberdad Digital TV, who I believe to be Brazilian. There’s a couple of useful things in this. The first is the oft repeated sequence of Piquet en route to the grid before the race starts. Comment was made at the time about just how crap a driver Piquet must have been to spin on the final corner of the installation lap. When compared to the incident at turn 17 on lap 14, it looks a little familiar.
The second thing of interest is the footage of the crash itself, especially when related to the telemetry produced by Renault from Piquet’s car. The car is splendidly sideways exiting the corner, as befits the late braking and hard acceleration on the telemetry. After the car slaps the far wall, the energy seems to come out of the crash, the car isn’t really damaged, and it’s rolling in the right direction, almost correcting onto the right line. Then, Piquet floors the throttle once more, the car does a swift 180° flip, and takes its wheels off whilst sitting backwards in the wall. Job done. (more…)
